I’ve recently realized that I write a lot of gazebo/outdoor garden scenes in my books. I don’t consciously do so – but I’m not surprised, either. Like the characters who live and breathe within me, and through me, I find that there are times when I need to get out. To be surrounded by nature’s beauty, and be reminded that there are powers stronger than the evil in the world – sources that breed the ability for new life to grow, for fragile things to exist. I am filled with peace when the scent of flowers reaches me, when I inhale them and physically share in their existence, taking their beauty within me.

It’s no wonder, then, that most days, in the course of my work, I head outside to the little garden oasis my husband and I created in our yard. I planted Rose bushes, and stop to smell them every single time I pass anytime one is in bloom. The bougainvillea and lantana were chosen for their vibrant colors and because they bloom all year here in Arizona. The fruit trees are obvious – their bear succulent fruit that we eat. And on it goes…

In The Fireman’s Son, in a particularly difficult scene, Reese can’t take Faye inside. He has to head out to his own little paradise in his backyard. His piece of nature includes the beach and the ocean, but the physical effects to him are the same. It could be that as the author of the book, I took him out there because it was where I’d need to be. One could be a practical thinker and insist that that was the case. One might even be right. I don’t believe it, though. I think that nature is a natural healer, purposely there for all of us to draw upon. I think nature’s ability to calm us, to give us strength and peace, is no mistake. It’s a purposeful part of the overall plan of life. And I think Reese is a pretty smart guy to be willing to avail himself of this great gift! I hope you’ll pick up his story and see what you think.
