She thinks of him as a friend. He’s loved her since high school.

She’s holding on to the past. He’s worked hard to overcome his.

Brooks knew better than to fall in love with Jaclyn. She’s a trust fund kid, and he’s from the wrong side of the tracks. Guys like him never end up with girls like her. His head understood the rules. His heart was another story.

Jaclyn scanned the list of entrees. The pork chop with apple-ginger chutney sounded good. So did the tuna-stuffed tomatoes. Too bad she’d already eaten lunch. She looked up and found Brooks watching her with a hard-to-define expression on his face.

“Am I taking too long?” she asked.

“Not at all. I was thinking how strange life is.”

She put down the menu. “How so?”

“The way it brings people together after long periods of time.”

It also had a way of taking other people away forever. “Life is full of surprises. This is one of the nicer ones.”

A waitress who couldn’t have been more than twenty stepped up to the table. “Hey, Deputy Fanning. Thanks for letting my brother off with a warning last week. I don’t know what you said to him, but he hasn’t gone more than three miles over the speed limit since.”

“I’m glad to hear it, Ivonne.”

Ivonne’s glance moved to Jaclyn. “What can I get for you, ma’am?”

The ‘ma’am’ relegated Jaclyn to middle age and beyond. Brooks must have picked up on it, too. His eyes twinkled with mischief. She retaliated by kicking his shin.

Ignoring his grunt of surprise, she smiled up at Ivonne. “I’ll have a chocolate éclair with coffee.”

“And you, deputy?”

“I’ll take a roast beef sandwich, mashed potatoes and a strawberry milkshake.”

“With whipped cream and a cherry?” Ivonne asked.

Brooks laughed. “Is there any other way to have a strawberry milkshake?”

Ivonne blushed all the way to her eyebrows. “No, sir. I’ll be back in a few minutes with your drinks.”

Once they were alone, Jaclyn said, “It’s obvious you’ve only changed on the outside. Everything’s still the same on the inside.”

“And you’re still handing out kicks without provocation.”

“There was plenty of provocation, and you know it. You thought it was funny when Ivonne called me ‘ma’am’.”

“What was funny was your expression. It’s really no different than her calling me ‘sir’.”

“I disagree. You hold a position of authority. That automatically gets you the ‘sir’ connotation. I’m not old enough to be called ‘ma’am’.”

“Still the same old Jaclyn. Getting worked up over nothing.”

“I hope I’m not the same old Jaclyn. I thought I had everything figured out back then. Truth is, I didn’t know much at all.”

He settled back against the cushioned seat. Even sitting down, he looked enormous. As for trying to see past him, it was impossible. The height and breadth of his shoulders blocked out everything else.

“Could’ve fooled me. I’d never met a girl who was as smart as she was pretty. I knew you were destined for great things.”

About the Author

I’m a Georgia girl at heart if not by birth. I love to read, watch college football, and spend time with my husband. I’m a hopeless romantic so there will always be a happily ever after in my stories. I also like to write about second chances because love doesn’t always work out the first time.

My books are sweet romances set in both contemporary and regency settings featuring stories about the journey to love, from that first meeting to the point where two people know their hearts are no longer their own. My characters aren’t perfect. They make mistakes and have faults like the rest of us. They learn the sometimes painful truth that the path to love isn’t always smooth, but it’s a road worth traveling.
