He was rambling; something Sam did herself when she was nervous. How funny that she was making him nervous. The whole morning had turned into something entirely different than what she had prepared for, and it was becoming harder and harder to maintain her attorney face.
She smiled, hoping to ease his discomfort. “Ali?” She quirked one brow. “Your daughter? The one in the car yesterday?”
“Yes.” He didn’t meet her gaze. Instead he focused on the apple, cutting it into precise sections. “She’s four.”
“And your wife? Does she help in the winery?”
He gave her a hard stare. “My wife is dead. Sean didn’t tell you?”
Now she was the one blushing. “I’m so sorry. No, he didn’t mention that when he prepared me to speak to you about the case.” Damn you, Sean. Thanks a lot. “May I ask what happened?”
“Pancreatic cancer.” Sadness fell like a veil over his eyes and the sparkle disappeared. “When Ali was two.”
A wave of pity washed over Sam, but she was pretty sure she didn’t need to show that to Conor. Instead she handed him a paper plate and reached for the bread. “Is this from a local bakery? I don’t recognize the brand.” She held the brown paper package up to read the label.
“Paula Meadows has Bread & Butter in town.” His tone brightened as he gave her a grateful smile. “Best bakery on the river. Her doughnuts are gone by ten every morning, so you have to get there early. And, man, her challah is amazing. This nine grain is Ali’s favorite.”
About the Author
