Music and Writing

Music touches me greatly in the creative process. Lyrics and melody have a way of pouring through to my soul and giving me an incredible muse. Every book I write, I create a playlist. It was actually a song that created the entire plot for my book. Gravity, by Sara Bareilles, was my inspiration. The song is about someone so drawn to someone else, that it’s almost like gravity that does the work. Bruce Springsteen’s Secret Garden was another key player in the writing of this book. Rachel is very guarded with her heart, but once someone breaks in, it’s worth it.

Listening to music tends to bring out a more emotional response in my writing. I drive an hour, one way, to work, and I find songs that relate to my characters and what they’re going through. Since I use Spotify, I download the songs I like and replay them when I get home and write. For “The Secret He Keeps”, I listened to a lot of Lady Antebellum, Ed Sheeran, and Otis Redding. I even list songs they dance to in the book. For that scene, I replayed the song until the scene was finished!

Julieann Dove lives in Virginia, yet longs to live everywhere else. It doesn’t come as a surprise that along with her gypsy soul, comes an active imagination. That’s why she loves to write and invent worlds and people, so that she can formulate their happily ever after. Hobbies include cooking new recipes, sewing, and spending time with her cute boyfriend/husband and five fabulous children. Vacations happen in Nantucket or the Carolina beaches—anywhere there is inspiration for her next book. One day she hopes to travel to Italy, drive one of those little cars around the countryside, and speak the language fluently!
