EXCERPT:

SABRINA

As I lay on the bed, wearing my ex-fiancé’s t-shirt and remembering the night he left me six months ago, I realize that tears are slipping silently down my cheeks.

I’ve done reasonably well, too. The first week, I was catatonic. The first month, I was practically a zombie. In those days, even showering on my day off had been a challenge. Within a couple of months, though, I was doing better. By the ninety-day mark, I could be mistaken for someone who hadn’t been virtually left at the altar.

Now, lying on the bed six months after Grant had thrown away our life together, I was almost indiscernible from a normal girl. Looking at me most days, you would never know that my life had been ripped apart by an exotic Olympian named Isabel and my former fiancé, Grant.

I sit up, realizing how far I’d come since that night. I put the back of my hand up to one cheek, then the other. No more. That asshole doesn’t get another single tear from me. Control-G-Delete.

It took three lifts to get to the point where he’d wanted to go. There were two other sets of skiers in front of them and a threesome coming up from behind. Even higher above them on the un-groomed slopes, a helicopter lowered itself and dropped three daredevil skiers onto the slopes.

“Awesome!” Jimmy exclaimed.

“Idiots,” Melanie groaned. “Those helicopters scare me,” she said as the helicopter flew away.

“Aw, Mom.”

“Those are real adventurers, Jimmy,” John said.

“You said it, Dad.”

Melanie skied over to the edge of the precipice and looked out.

“John, I’ve never seen anything this beautiful,” Melanie said with a rush of wonder in her voice. “Why it’s like I’m nearly to heaven.”

“You’re as far up this mountain as you can get,” John said.

“I want some pictures before we start down.”

“Good idea,” John said skiing over to Jimmy. “How’s this?”

Melanie took two shots and then John took photographs of Melanie and Jimmy.

“We should have gotten that new camera, Dad. The one with the delay so we could prop it up and it would take all of us together.”

“You’re right, son. I should have.”

As Melanie took a round of photos of the topography, a mass of clouds funneled over the top of the mountain. But these clouds were not high and fluffy like the ones that had transformed into shapes in the sky earlier. These clouds were dense, low and moving very fast.

A sense of dread enveloped Melanie. In seconds, it was as if the sun had been blotted out. Where only moments ago she was squinting into the sun, now she couldn’t see the sun at all.

“John, did you check that weather bulletin this morning?”

“What…bulletin?” He asked too late. He shivered and not from the cold. “I think we’d better start down.” He turned to Jimmy. His voice was filled with concern. “No hot dogging this time, son. Okay?”

“What is it, Dad?” Jimmy asked feeling their fear. Sensing their terror.

The snow squall moved over them, masking them from the skiers behind them.

“Let’s go. Jimmy, you follow me. Melanie, stay close.”

“I’ll do it,” she replied determinedly.

The squall moved faster than lightening Jimmy thought. He was a good skier and yet, he felt as if he was going far, far too slow. In minutes he couldn’t see in front of him, or beside him. He was thankful his father wore a fire engine red jumpsuit. His mother wore tangerine orange. Both of them stuck out of a crowd like summer vegetables at market. Against the snow, they were like bright lights of hope.

Expertly, John led the way, increasing his speed yet dodging trees and circumventing moguls. His skill at the slalom proved to be lifesaving as he swooshed past clumps of underbrush that seemed to appear out of nowhere, like elves popping out of the ground. Intermittently, he turned his head to keep Jimmy and Melanie in his sights. Each time he did, he signaled with a nod that everything was fine.

Though they moved quickly, the wind gusted at ever increasing speeds thrusting the cloud of blinding snow down the slope. It threatened to overtake them.

John knew that if they didn’t beat the squall, they would have to find shelter until the snowstorm passed. There was no telling how long that could be. If they were to remain this high on the mountain overnight, they could freeze. Realizing their predicament was more dire than he’d originally thought. John slowed and motioned for them to take another route to the left. “We need to go around the squall,” he yelled to them.

But the wind suddenly seemed more than wind. It didn’t howl anymore, it thundered.

John slowed down for Jimmy and Melanie to catch up to him.

It was then Jimmy saw the panic on his father’s face. “What is it?”

John cocked his head to the distance.  Suddenly, the ground rumbled as if it were a sleeping ice dragon come alive.

“Dad?!”

“Avalanche!” John yelled, ramming his poles into the snow. “Ski, Jimmy, as fast as you can. Just go straight! Fast!”

Jimmy followed his father’s command. He shoved himself off, keeping his knees bent, skis straight and together, he picked up speed. He leaned as far over the front of his skis as was possible. He was flying like the wind.

The snow squall created a white out. Jimmy couldn’t see anything. He skied as if he knew where he was going, but he didn’t. He pretended “the force” was guiding him. He had to pretend something because he just didn’t know anymore.

The sound in the crisp, cold air was thunderous, like rounds of cannon fire must have sounded to ancient warriors. Jimmy had never heard anything like it. It terrified him. The ground moved as if making moguls of its own. Then Jimmy realized it wasn’t that the snow underneath was moving, it was rolling snow moving from the top of the mountain down over them.

He didn’t see his father anymore. He didn’t know where he’d gone or if he was even alive.

Suddenly, above the roar of the avalanche, he heard his mother’s voice. “Jimmy!”

How odd. She doesn’t sound scared anymore.

“Jimmy.” She called him as if she were calling him to dinner.

Then everything in Jimmy’s vision went

#CoverReveal #PreOrder #Giveaway – INTO THE RIOT by Karen Renee

Title: Into The Riot
Series: Riot MC #3
Author: Karen Renee
Genre: MC Romance (Romantic Suspense)
Release Date: December 4, 2018
Tennille “Neil” Lyons has her hands full with Cecilia, her drug addicted sister who recently turned to prostitution to maintain her addiction. Having her sister commit to going to rehab feels like a stroke of luck, until the dealer/handler shows up making threats. While drowning her worries at a hole-in-the-wall bar, she meets a handsome biker. As much as she wants to dismiss him, she finds out he is rougher and tougher than any other man Neil has met before. Which may come in handy, because if Cecilia doesn’t pay her substantial debt, the dealer intends to collect from Neil instead.
Augustus “Razor” Richardson is prospecting with the Riot MC after being renounced from his old MC. He has a past and a reputation as a ladies’ man, but rarely does a woman so blithely give him the brush-off. He knows something is wrong, but she slips away before he can figure out how to help. When an unexpected phone call puts her back in touch, Razor will stop at nothing to protect Neil from harm. However, Razor’s past isn’t done with him yet. Can he prove to Neil that she can trust him before it’s too late?

I had finished the last of my second pulled-pork sandwich, and was debating on making an early exit when Volt approached our huddle.
“Hear you got some problems?” he asked me, as he took a seat in a chair next to Jackie.
“Beg your pardon?”
“‘Your sister’s problems are your problems’?”
Shrugging, I said, “Is what it is. It’ll work out one way or another. It’s what sisters do, share their problems with one another.”
His chin-lift seemed almost ominous in the flickering light of the fire pit. “It’s what the brotherhood does, too. My girl likes you, that means you should tell us about your sister’s problems.”
I scowled. Then, jerking my head at Vamp, I asked, “I thought she was his girl. So, how would you hear that? I didn’t share that with Frankie or any of the other ladies.”
From behind me, Razor’s deep voice said, “I shared it with him.”
My jaw clenched as I fought the urge to punch this guy. Seriously! Where did he get off telling these people these things?
I focused on Volt. “Really, it doesn’t matter. With any luck, those issues will go away in a few weeks.”
“Heard she’s in rehab,” Volt said.
I tilted my head toward the sky, realized Razor was still behind me, and turned my head to him. “You really do have a big a mouth, PB.”
Vamp chuckled and asked, “PB? What’s that about?”
I turned a triumphant look to Vamp. “PB. Short for Pretty Boy.”
Razor growled behind me as Vamp, Volt, and Cal roared with laughter.
“Maybe we should change his road name when he earns his patch,” Cal suggested.
I didn’t hear any of the responses to that because Razor was whispering in my ear, “I end up with that as a road name, you’ll pay. Dearly, you’ll pay. I’d verify that you got what I’m sayin’, but I don’t care. You’ll damn sure get it if that shit hits the fan.”
I should have restrained my smart-ass self, but my response could not be denied. “Oh! I’m quaking in my boots, Pretty Boy.”
The fire made Razor’s blue eyes glisten, but he shifted his gaze from me to Volt. “Don’t let this gorgeous smart-ass change the subject. Her sister’s got serious problems.”
My neck was beginning to ache from leaning back to look at Razor for so long, but I kept my gaze steady as I asked, “How would you know that? I didn’t tell you jack about her problems.”
This drew his eyes back to me. “You downed two G-and-T’s in less than thirty minutes, and Ethel’s is not a place people go to for Happy Hour on a Wednesday night.”
My eyes narrowed and I wanted to stand up, but at the same time I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of getting such a strong response from me.
“My drinking habits on a random evening don’t give you any knowledge about any problems my sister may, or may not, have.”
“Mmmm, this is good. I wish Tasha were here,” Mallory said.
“Me, too,” I heard, and I turned to see Jackie with an ear-to-ear grin on her face.
“Stop it,” I snapped at them.
Razor spoke and I looked back at him. “You had answers for everything ‘except her problems.’ You said so. You’re pretty damn quick with retorts, so that tells me that her problems must be in the big leagues. Add rehab into that equation, you need people like Riot on your side.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” I snapped.
Volt’s calm voice pulled my head around. “Neil, I had a sister who got caught up in the wrong stuff. She never made it to rehab, because the asshole she fell for got behind the wheel high and drunk, running them into a parked car on the curb of the road. But I do know what it’s like to see your sister make bad choices over and over and over again. If we can help, we will. Keep it in mind.”
“Thanks,” I said to him, hoping he could see the sincerity in my eyes, although what the hell a group of bikers could really do for me and Cecilia, I did not know.
“No problem.”
Razor’s hands clamped on my shoulders. “Was that so hard, Tennille?”
“Is it so hard for you to mind your own business, Augustus?”
I bit back my smile as I heard multiple gasps around the fire pit.
Warm breath was on my neck as Razor whispered, “You’ll damn sure pay for that.”
I grabbed my Styrofoam plate and shot out of my plastic chair. “I do not think so. Hate to break it to you, but the payment the last time was lackluster at best.”

His expression went from heated to crestfallen to angry in seconds at my blatant lie. It had been a short kiss on Wednesday and there was no tongue or anything, but it was far from ‘lackluster.’ I turned on my heel, and as I marched away, I said to the group, “Great to meet y’all and thanks for the pulled pork sandwiches. They were the best I’ve had in a long time. Thanks for the invite, Trixie. See ya.”

After losing her mother and breaking up with her fiancé, Erin Douglas has buried herself away in the family home. She is trying to avoid a visit by her brother, Fraser and her sister, Heather can’t understand why when Jackson McGee makes an appearance.

To reach the hall, just off the village square, Erin took a short cut through the churchyard. Her phone buzzing in the depths of her bag slowed her pace. Was Fraser calling again? He didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer easily. She dropped her holdall on a bench, rifling through resistance bands and leaflets to retrieve it before the call went to voicemail. A picture of her sister lit up the screen. Her family were out in full force today.

‘Heather, hi! I can’t speak for long, I’m on my way to a class and I don’t want to be late.’ She sank onto the bench and its dampness hit her. She remembered the rain shower earlier as she jumped up to prevent it seeping through her leggings and knocked her open holdall off the bench. Blast! Everything was spilling out over the muddy path. She crouched to pick up the scattered contents with her free hand.

I haven’t much time either,’ Heather informed her. ‘I’m back at work, you know. I’m grabbing some lunch but I’m covering a lead so, be warned, I might have to cut you off.’

Typical Heather, Erin couldn’t help smiling, she could give anything a dramatic flavour. ‘If you’re so busy, what is it you want?’ she asked reaching for a stray flyer that had blown under the bench. As she stuffed it into the bag, she caught sight of faded jeans and well-worn boots just in front of her.

Erin lifted her head to meet eyes that seemed amused. Their owner had a handful of the colourful resistance bands that she sometimes used for floor work. ‘You look like you’re in need of a hand, should I?’ He was indicating to her holdall.

She nodded, pointed to the phone and mouthed ‘Thank you’ as her cheeks grew even hotter.

‘It’s Fraser, he’s just phoned… told me you’ve put him off staying over tomorrow night and, Erin, I think it’s just not on. Magpie’s Rest is his home too, you know. Why the hell don’t you just leave him the key and, if you’re out, he can relax, maybe catch up with some old mates?’

Erin moved the phone and Heather’s voice, it had risen to full volume, away from her ear as she watched her helper put the last band into her holdall, zip it up and place it back on the bench before walking off towards the square. He was tall, ruggedly handsome and certainly not local. She called out, ‘Thanks!’

He turned back and lifted his hand in acknowledgement. ‘Glad to help.’

Erin, who are you talking too? Are you listening?’

‘Yes, I’m listening. You want Fraser to stay with me and I can’t do it.’

‘If you want my opinion, you’re not being fair. I told Fraser that I’d have a word with you. You’re making excuses…taking no bloody notice. Look, I haven’t time for this, I’ve got a dozen things to do. Give Fraser a call and try to make him welcome tomorrow.’

Was that a ‘kiss’ or a ‘tut’ noise signalling the end of the conversation? Blast, now she had upset her sister as well as her brother.

Erin turned her phone onto silent and pushed her emotions down into the slow churning spin dryer of her stomach and hoped it wouldn’t rev up to full spin, as she entered the village hall. Most of her Pilates class were already there so she summoned her best ‘show must go on’ smile.

‘Hello everybody, it’s a lovely afternoon so let’s roll our mats onto the floor, get some music on and begin.’

As the music started, Erin stood at the front and gave her whole attention to her class. ‘Standing tall, place your feet so they’re parallel with one another and a hip distance apart, let the weight of your body roll into your toes and heels before finding your centre of balance. Now breathe in, take a lateral breath and feel your ribcage move away from your body…’ The familiar music and actions began to work their magic and took control of her nerves and her digestive system. Her worries faded for now and her mind wandered back to the good-looking man who had come to her rescue in the churchyard. His accent, was it American?

Molly immediately brightened. “Nora! Please tell me you’re here to rescue us.”

“What else would get me out of bed at this ungodly hour?”

Was eight forty-five an ungodly hour? Owen wondered. Apparently for Nora it was.

“I assume this is Homer’s great-nephew.” Removing her coat, she gave him careful consideration. “He didn’t mention you were easy on the eyes.”

Owen grinned. “He didn’t mention you were, either.”

Her dour countenance magically transformed into a delighted grin. “And charming to boot. I do believe this next month is going to be quite enjoyable.”

“For me, too.”

She twittered. Owen didn’t think he’d heard a woman twitter since he first met his former mother-in-law.

“Are you a witch?” Cody glowered at her. “I don’t like witches.”

Owen was tempted to cover his son’s mouth before the boy embarrassed him further. “Sorry about that.”

“No worries. Your children are adorable. Emily asked me to watch them while you’re busy marrying folks. Got a half-dozen of my own grandkids, so I’m plenty experienced.”

Owen thought her assessment of his kids was much too kind. “I’d be very grateful and will compensate you.”

“Emily’s paying my salary. Said childcare was part of her arrangement with you.”

It was, but Owen didn’t want to take advantage.

“Did Grandma tell you she was eloping?” Molly asked Nora.

“I’m her best friend. She called me last night.”

Molly scowled. “She left us a note.”

“Don’t go getting bent out of shape. She didn’t tell you because you’d have tried to talk her out of it.”

“I absolutely would have.”

“See?” Nora moved her suitcase-sized purse to her other arm. I’m also supposed to take over guest relations for you.”

“What?” Molly drew back. “No!”

Nora shrugged. “Suit yourself. But it’s either that or wedding coordinator, and I’m thinking you’ll be a whole lot better at coordinating weddings than me, considering you have experience planning two of your own.”

Molly ignored the comment and faced Owen. “I’ll fetch the cabin key and meet you there. Number six. Drive around back. Farthest one on the left.” With that, she left.

Owen watched her retreating back. Molly had been married twice?

“Touched a nerve, apparently,” Nora said, erupting in laughter.

Another sweet with heat winning story! This was a frustrating book for me because I wanted Rex and Jade together from the beginning but their loyalties to their families overpowered my wishes (temporarily though – hehe). You can feel the magnetic pull between Rex and Jade so much that you will want to keep turning the page to see if they will go behind their families to be together. A tantalizing weekend read!

Synopsis

After ditching a troubled relationship—and her veterinary practice in the process—Jade Johnson returns to the safety of her small hometown and finally finds her footing. That is…until her horse is injured and the son of the man her father has been feuding with for more than forty years comes to her rescue. She’s spent forever trying to deny her attraction to headstrong, too-handsome-for-his-own-good cowboy Rex Braden. The last thing she needs is that particular man complicating her life.

Fiercely loyal Rex Braden has never put anyone or anything before his family. Despite the irate family history, sparks fly between Rex and Jade, unleashing fifteen years of stifled, forbidden love—causing the rebel in each of them to rear its powerful head.

Loyalties are tested, and relationships are strained as Rex and Jade find out if true love really can conquer all.

Our Sweet Destiny is a Sweet with Heat novel and conveys all of the passion you’d expect to find between two people in love without any graphic scenes or harsh language. If you’re looking for a more explicit romance, pick up the steamy edition, Destined for Love, written by New York Times bestselling author Melissa Foster. Addison Cole is Melissa’s sweet-romance pen name.

Excerpt

Jade stood in the road, watching Rex’s truck disappear around the corner. Everything she thought she’d known about Rex Braden when they were younger seemed to still be true. He was a grumpy, cocky, beautiful man. Darn him. She had to admit, though, the fact that he’d actually spoken to her—and helped her get her horse out of the ravine—was far more than she’d ever thought possible between a Johnson and a Braden.
She walked Flame down the long driveway and into the barn. The familiar smell of manure and hay wrapped around her like a warm hug. The smell was too pungent for most people, but to Jade it represented everything she’d ever known and loved. It represented home. The sounds of the other horses brought a smile to her face, as she’d soon be setting them free in the pasture. She stroked Rudy’s jaw as she passed his stall. Rudy was one of her favorite horses. He was a bright red sorrel with white stockings and a blaze, and he was not only magnificent to look at, but his spunky personality reminded Jade of herself. She wasn’t exactly a rebel, but she wasn’t a conformist either, often leaving her family and friends, and even herself, to wonder what she might do next.
She was relieved to find that Flame was no longer favoring his leg. She turned on soothing music and took a few deep breaths to calm herself down before moving to Flame’s side. She closed her eyes for just a moment to focus her mind on Flame instead of Rex. She concentrated on his breathing and found the rhythm of his breath and his heartbeat. She ran her hands along Flame’s back and sides, soothing his body with a series of slow, gentle strokes. She felt her body relaxing as the music and the feel of the horse calmed her as much as she did him. Jade had always believed that touch could heal, and although she put medicine first, she believed in a more holistic, compassionate approach to animal health care, and she included touch, which she also studied, in most of her healing protocols.
She wondered what Rex would be like if someone took the time to touch him in a soothing way. He reminded her of an injured animal. At first glance, they were cute and you just wanted to touch them, but get too close and they would bare their teeth. Jade knew the secret, though. Once she moved past those teeth and soothed their injuries, they were just as gentle as she first imagined they might be.
Yeah, right.
She really wasn’t sure what to make of Rex. One minute he was mean as a snake and the next he was going out of his way to help her. She’d thought there was a flash of something between them when she’d been practically knocked into his lap. She had the overwhelming urge to kiss him, but then she looked into those dark Braden eyes and she saw a flash of something dangerous there—the heat of which she might not be able to resist—and she bolted. Besides, he ran so hot and cold that he’d probably reel her in only to turn her away, and she was not going to be the girl Rex turned down. That would be all she needed. Especially in their small town.

EXCERPT:

Before she can continue on with her self-depreciative speech I gently, but firmly, place my hand over her mouth. “Enough, Ellie,” I tell her, my tone leaving no room for misinterpretation. I mean business.

To my absolute shock, Ellie listens. Her jaw slams shut beneath my hand. I expected her to lick it or try to bite me—it wouldn’t be the first time—but she does nothing. Her eyes lock on mine, uncertainty and confusion shining in their depths.

I drop my hand slowly from her mouth, then slide it around her jaw. “Enough,” I whisper as I move in closer, bringing my chest just an inch from hers. Keeping our eyes locked together I explain my frustration. “You say men don’t want to stay with you because you’re a lot to handle…and Red, you’re right.”

Her entire body solidifies.

Sliding my hand down her throat I feel her pulse race rapidly under my palm. The further my hand travels, the softer her body becomes. It’s just her stubborn resistance keeping her from melting into me the way I know she wants to.

When I reach her hip, I squeeze. A tiny moan escapes her before she can stop it, and I smirk. Not once have I allowed my eyes to roam her incredible body. I read everything she refuses to say aloud in her green depths. She knows I’m different. She knows this thing with us is different.

I know she says she’s ready for sex, but apprehension is clear in her eyes. And I refuse to take her until she is as sure about me as I am about her. Bringing my free hand to her other hip I curl my fingers into her flesh that peeks from her between her T and shorts, then lift and swing her into my lap. The startled look on her face vanishes the instant she feels my erection pushing up into her ass. Her gaze morphs into desire and

lust.

“I want you, Angel. I’ve wanted you from the second I laid eyes on you. You fascinate me. Entertain me. Calm me. Captivate me. Arouse me. And you do it all, without even trying.” I press my forehead against hers as I relish the feel of her rapid breaths against my lips. “Don’t doubt me. Don’t doubt this. Us,” I plead, sick of dictating how she should feel, but desperate for her to understand. “I am not them.”

Finally, after what feels like an eternity, Ellie nods against my forehead. “Okay,” she whispers. I feel the relief that one single word brings, all the way down to my goddamned toes. Her hips rock against me, ever so gently, teasing me. Her soft hand slides around my neck, coming to rest in the hair at my nape. She stokes her long fingers through my hair and I tip my head back, letting her take control, and loving every second of it.

She presses an open-mouthed kiss to my throat, scraping her teeth against the sensitive flesh as she moves down to my collar bone. My cock is rigid, straining to be freed. Her ass pushes harder against it, grinding down on my length. My fingers dig further into her lush hips as I take over, shifting her until my cock presses against her centre, then I set the pace.

Excerpt

Ben went to his room and Tanya came to mine,  As soon as we sat on my bed, my phone dinged.

What’s the weather like?

“What does she want?” Tanya asked.  She was staring at her own phone.

“She wants to know the weather.”  I looked up at her.  “How did you know it was Chloe?”

“Nolan doesn’t text you.” Tanya shrugged.  She kept her eyes on her phone.  “Nine out of ten of your texts are Chloe.  You need more friends.”

It’s hot.  We’re in a desert.

What should I wear for our night out?

“She wants to know what to wear for our night out.”

“I’m not even sure what we’re going to do for that.  I’ve asked my assistant to give us three bars and three restaurants.”

“Do they have karaoke?”

“The bars do.”

“Then Chloe will be happy.”

We’re going to do karaoke.  So sparkle.

I’m getting ideas.  I’ll bring feathers.

“I invited Ben,” I said and texted at the same time.

What?????

Tanya looked up.  “Why?”

“I’m setting him up with Chloe.”

I’m setting him up with you, remember.

This is girl time.

“I thought this was just the three of us,” Tanya said.

“It just sort of happened.”  I kept my eyes on my phone.

He could fit in.  You’ll like him.

“How would it just sort of happen?” Tanya asked.

“Talking to you now, it sounds weird.  But it wasn’t at the moment and I’m setting him up with Chloe,” I said.

“Why are you setting him up with Chloe when you like him?”

I’m not sure I’ll like him if he fits in.  I like men who don’t remind me of my girlfriends.

You’re too picky.

“Stop texting and talk to me.”

“I’m married.”  I still didn’t look up.

“We’ve had this conversation before.  You’ve had a huge crush on him since college, and it can’t make you feel good to think that he’s going to hook up with Chloe.”

“He may not,” I said, still staring at my phone.

“I thought that was the purpose of having him meet Chloe.”

I like meat loaf men.

I think that’s the wrong metaphor.

I want a hunk a hung of burning love.

Crap.  Hunk a hunk.  Unless you’re doing a Freudian interp.

“You like him and that’s okay.  Even the perfect marriages need some intrigue.”

“And how would a college crush do that?” I asked.

“A guy thinks you’re cute.  There’s nothing wrong with that,” Tanya said.

“I’m not sure he thinks I’m cute.”

“You’re the only one he gives rides to.”

“I will admit, he likes me as a friend, but I’m a very friendly person.”

“I don’t think this will help your friendship with Chloe.”

I looked up at her, finally.  She looked concerned.  “So I should hook up with Ben?”

“Of course not.  But Chloe isn’t a good solution.”

I liked texting better than talking.  There wasn’t a look of concern coming from my phone.

Talking to Tanya.  Both of you don’t want Ben there.

So uninvite.

That may be tricky.

I believe in you.

I hate you both.

Then this weekend should be a blast.

Excerpt

He longed to kiss her berry red lips.

The memory of their sweetness taunted him.

Max gave himself a mental jerk. Now that he’d found Noemi again, the last thing he wanted to do was scare her off. What were the chances of them running into each other again?

Slim.

Had she figured out his true identity and planned this reunion? Not possible. He hadn’t decided on coming to Mont Coeur until last night. Even then, he’d only told his trusted staff.

Max gazed over at Noemi. Her posture was stiff and she kept her face turned away. He wondered if the source of her discomfort was from their collision, the run-in with the fans, learning he was a prince or all of the above.

Normally learning that he was the crown prince had women falling all over him. But Noemi had pulled away. In fact, if she sat any closer to her door, she’d fall out. Most interesting. He’d thought they’d both enjoyed their time together.

But it wasn’t too late. He still had a chance to find out if there was truly a spark between them.

When the SUV pulled to a stop in front of a luxurious chalet, Noemi said a quick thank-you followed by goodbye. It’d be so easy to just let her go. He’d still have his good memories, but he’d never know what had been real and what had been part of his wishful imagination.

As he watched her head for the front steps, he told his security team to wait for him. He hopped out into the snowy driveway and followed her.

“Noemi, wait.”

For a moment, he didn’t think she was going to stop. Her hand reached for the doorknob, but then she hesitated. She turned to him but didn’t say anything. Her gaze didn’t quite meet his. She stood there waiting for him to have his say.

“You didn’t even tell me your last name. I don’t want to make the same mistake twice.” When she sent him a puzzled look, he added, “Letting you get away without knowing your name.”

A Small Town Christmas Excerpt 8

He was rambling; something Sam did herself when she was nervous. How funny that she was making him nervous. The whole morning had turned into something entirely different than what she had prepared for, and it was becoming harder and harder to maintain her attorney face.

She smiled, hoping to ease his discomfort. “Ali?” She quirked one brow. “Your daughter? The one in the car yesterday?”

“Yes.” He didn’t meet her gaze. Instead he focused on the apple, cutting it into precise sections. “She’s four.”

“And your wife? Does she help in the winery?”

He gave her a hard stare. “My wife is dead. Sean didn’t tell you?”

Now she was the one blushing. “I’m so sorry. No, he didn’t mention that when he prepared me to speak to you about the case.” Damn you, Sean. Thanks a lot. “May I ask what happened?”

“Pancreatic cancer.” Sadness fell like a veil over his eyes and the sparkle disappeared. “When Ali was two.”

A wave of pity washed over Sam, but she was pretty sure she didn’t need to show that to Conor. Instead she handed him a paper plate and reached for the bread. “Is this from a local bakery? I don’t recognize the brand.” She held the brown paper package up to read the label.

“Paula Meadows has Bread & Butter in town.” His tone brightened as he gave her a grateful smile. “Best bakery on the river. Her doughnuts are gone by ten every morning, so you have to get there early. And, man, her challah is amazing. This nine grain is Ali’s favorite.”
