Tips for Choosing a Wedding Photographer
The wedding day can be stressful, but if you plan in advance and cover your bases, the day can go off without a hitch. Here are some tips when hiring a photographer.
Start your search by getting a list of local photographers and reading reviews from recent newlyweds. Review websites and blogs to check out photos of other weddings they’ve shot, which will give you an idea of their style. Visit their social media pages. Look for feedback from previous clients.
You should meet your potential photographers in person. Sit down. Discuss your vision. See if you agree on the tone and style. Check availability. Set up in-person meetings with three to five potential photographers. Discuss venue, wedding style and fees.
View Full Wedding Albums
Don’t base your decision on a quick look of what you see in a photographer’s highlights gallery or album. Ask to see two or three full galleries from real weddings they’ve shot to get a better idea of what your complete collection of photos might look like after the wedding. And ask to see at least one or two complete albums of weddings that are in similar settings to yours.
Are You the Right Fit?
Don’t underestimate the importance of liking and bonding with your photographer. In order to get the best photos, go with a pro who has a firm grasp of social graces but is bold enough to go hunting for great images. Remember, they’ll be shadowing your every move, and the more comfortable both of you are with the photographer, the better the photos will turn out. Likewise, you don’t want the photographer to offend or annoy any guests, but to capture them in their best light in an unobtrusive way. They should ask lots of questions and be a good listener.
Price and What They Offer
When looking at someone’s pricing, be careful to see what’s included in the package you’re looking at. Second shooters, additional hours, hi-res JPGs, albums, and engagement sessions may be included in the price quote, or might be extra money. Make sure you’re not signing up to pay more later for things you definitely want. Compare packages. Additional prints can always be ordered later when you’re not facing the burden of paying for a wedding.
Once your wedding has happened, you’re going to want to get your hands on your photos. Get a timeline for how fast or slow a particular photographer turns around images. Also find out what rights you will have and what publication rights your photographer has. If you want control of where your photos are published, ask for that in advance. Find out if you’ll get access to your unprocessed images.
