Character Interview with Carter

Today we are talking with Carter Thompson, hero of Happily Ever Afters. Hi, Carter!

Hi. No one’s ever called me a hero before. I’m flattered. And searching for my cape.

Tell us about yourself.

Like you said, I’m Carter Thompson. My official title is long, but it means that I’m an economist for the State Department. I’m 34 and I live right here in Washington, D.C.

You’ve lived in Washington D.C. your whole life, right? What do you love about that area?

I sure have. My family has been involved in different aspects of the government for several generations, which I take great pride in. I love the rich heritage of the area coupled with the freshness of new policies that continue to make the world a better place.

Do you have a favorite spot in D.C.?

I find all Smithsonian museums fascinating, but if I had to only visit one it would be the National Air and Space Museum. I take Lainey there in the book when she comes to visit.

We get to hear Lainey’s thoughts when you meet in Puerto Rico, but what was your first impression when you met Lainey on the catamaran?

I think my first thought was ‘yowzah’. *laughs at himself* In all seriousness, Lainey was someone I noticed when I was her TA in college. She walked with confidence and answered questions intelligently. Of course, I noticed how beautiful she was the first day of class, but what made her stand out was her kindness. I intentionally avoided meeting her that semester because of the rule against TA’s dating undergrad students, and then our paths didn’t cross again before I moved back to Washington. But I never forgot her. When I saw her on the boat, it was like finding a lost treasure.

Awww. That’s so sweet. And that was it?

Well, our story gets a little more complicated than that. But yeah. For me, it was always her.

Before you go, tell us one thing about yourself. Something you don’t tell us in the book.

I just got my pilot’s license. It’s something I wanted to do for a long time and decided to go after it after a conversation I had with Lainey when she was visiting my hometown. I’m just starting to plan a trip for Christmas. Someplace fun I can fly to with my new license, and I’m open to suggestions. If anyone has an idea, let me know.

About the Author

Rachel Magee wrote her first novel when she was twelve and entered it into a contest for young author/illustrators. Unfortunately, the judges weren’t impressed with her stick figures. So she dropped the dream of becoming a world famous illustrator and stuck to spinning stories. When she’s not busy working on her latest book, she loves to travel with her family and friends. By far, her favorite destination is the beach, which tends to work its way into most of her stories. Between vacations, you can find her at home in The Woodlands, TX with her wonderful husband, their two adventurous kids and a couple of spirited pets, all of whom share Rachel’s love of the ocean.
