A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Getting Published
I started my journey into publishing officially back in 2008. I had just started law school and was earning two different Juris Doctorate Degrees (one from a US law school and one from a Canadian law school). Let’s just say I was a glutton for punishment by double classwork and my number of finals each semester. So of course in the midst of this intense school work, I decided to jump into pursuing my publishing career.
I had been writing epic fantasy novels since college but a fellow writing pointed out to me that I should write romance. I was aghast! I’d never even read a romance novel. Cue a montage of me vigorously devouring a dozen romance novels in the next month and realizing my judgment of the genre had been so wrong. So I immediately started to write romance novels, or rather several novellas which were rejected a few times but I learned how to write short and long stories.
By the time 2011 hit, I had to put my writing career on hold to study for the bar exam. I spent 6 agonizing months without touching my writing notebook which about killed me. But once I took the bar, I jumped right back into writing and by early 2012 I had signed my first agent! Before signing with my first agent I had a whopping 87 rejections on my first real manuscript but I didn’t’ give up. I started winning writing contests, joined the Romance Writers of America and for 2 straight years I took 1 or 2 workshops on craft and marketing a month! By the time I signed my agent I was in the middle of really figuring out how to approach writing as a business and not a hobby.
Unfortunately within 4 months, the agent had a mental breakdown and left the business, dropping all of her clients. I made a very foolish mistake then of signing another agent immediately without doing any research on her even though I had two other offers on the table.
I spent the next 4 years tied down to an agent that didn’t listen to me, and didn’t work hard for me. I had to contract my own books, sell my own books to houses and basically be my own agent all while losing money from each royalty check that went to that previous agent. It was tough. After 15 books I was ready to make a change, so when my agency contract finally expired, I worked in secret to research new agents and found a new set of agents to query. When I finally signed my new one a few months after terminated my previous agent, I felt like Snow White in the forest, with animals dancing around me while I was singing.
I had a rocky hard to get published but I never stopped, never gave up. Even now after 21 books, I’m still pushing myself, learning to hone my craft and figuring out how to be better and better at everything! Writing is a career that evolves constantly and it’s so important to learn how to adapt. Once you’re ready for that, you’ll find the joys of writing are incredible!
