The Hive Queen Saga’s Thrilling Conclusion!

Rhiannon and her Hive have mastered space travel. Sort of. At least, they’re better at it. They’ve outsmarted kidnappers, survived severe oxygen deprivation, and heisted back their own ship engine from would-be thieves.

Since joining up, they’ve traveled further and further away from their home planet. But out on Yin He Garden Station (in Chinese-owned territory), home catches up at a physics symposium.

When Alan’s former research advisor makes an offer that’ll bring them home as respected members of society, Rhiannon knows she has to accept. But home isn’t exactly as she left it, and a hostile space fleet stands between her aging ship and her new/old life. Should she be running towards the fleet, or scurrying back into international space as fast as her craft can go?

Rhiannon’s focus was all shandivang. She was hot and cold. The air had changed from chilled breeze to unmoving nothingness. Her feet still ached from the smoothly spikey pebbles, and a glance up proved the Faraday cage still laced the air overhead. That glance up also filled her with vertigo and she listed to the side.

Other than the ground and the sky, she’d lost her sense of perspective. The garden had been blotted out by walls. She could reach out her arms straight at 180 degrees and touch metal sheets on both sides. Two people would be cozy—she and Wenyan would be cozy—and four would be cramped. “Where are we?” she asked. Though the answer was obvious. She was still in the garden; she just couldn’t see it. “How do we get out?”

“It is a safety measure,” said Wenyan, voice gentle. He continued to give her the chance to come to her own conclusions and comforts, choosing to lean against a metal wall rather than into her space. She could have used the distraction, really. “In case of an air leak, cells slam down from above. The central garden is so intricate that the life-pod cells here must be small to avoid damaging the architecture or the plants. Further out, the rooms are larger.”

Rhiannon’s breath came faster. Her toes dug into the empty spaces between pebble spikes. “Air leak!” Her stomach pushed at her skin and blood pounded in her ears. “We need to get to the emergency spacesuits.”

Wenyan laughed. “This is nothing. It is normal, just an experiment. Come sit with me.”

He was delusional. “Emergency spacesuits,” she said again. The pounding in her ears could have been her pulse. Or it could have been her Devoted banging on the other side of the wall. They could be trying to get to her. They could be in their vacuum-sealed death throes.

She splayed her hands against the metal prison. Trapped!
